Dr. E. C. Krupp became the Acting Director of Griffith Observatory in 1974. Krupp had been hired in 1970 as a Planetarium Lecturer and been appointed Observatory Curator in 1972.

One Small Step: The 40th Anniversary of Apollo 14

Griffith Observatory continues its celebration of NASA’s Apollo missions to the Moon with events marking the 40th anniversary of the flight of Apollo 14 and the 50th anniversary of the flight of Ham the Chimp, the first hominid in space.

Renovation and Expansion Timeline

Though the construction project at the Observatory lasted for only four years from 2002-2006, the planning for the renovation and expansion project started decades earlier, with the creation of Friends Of The Observatory in 1978.

Exhibit Program Approach

The renovation and expansion of Griffith Observatory offered the opportunity to rethink the building’s entire exhibit program. Even with 20,000 square feet of exhibition space in the expanded building, this meant an exhaustive exploration of astronomy was neither practical nor desirable.
