Southern Moonrise at the Major Lunar Standstill

Griffith Observatory is celebrating their 90th anniversary! On May 14, 2025, we will broadcast the full Moon rising on the eastern horizon at its most southerly position.

Every 18.6 years, our Moon reaches the extremes of its orbit around the Earth. We observe this as the Moon rises and sets at its most northerly and southerly positions on the horizon. On the evening of May 14, we will observe the Moon rising as far to the south as it ever does. This happens during the Major Lunar Standstill.
