Major Standstill Southern Moon Transit

Every 18.6 years, our Moon’s orbit is tilted at its greatest angle to the equator. We normally observe this as the Moon rises and sets at its most northerly and southerly positions on the horizon, but in the late hours of August 5, we shall see the Moon travel through the midpoint of its path across our sky. At 10:22 p.m., PDT, the Moon will cast its light on our meridian arc in the Gottlieb Transit Corridor and illuminate the inscribed Major Standstill Southern Moon Transit markers that only see moonlight on these rare occasions. Griffith Observatory will be broadcasting this event live on YouTube, weather permitting.
